I live a few miles north of a small town and availability of FFL services is limited. Given the sometimes limited customer base I can understand why some FFLs charge more for their services. Still, the ONE local gun shop / jewelry store charges $50 per transfer so three cost $150 with no discount for multiple transfers. The ONE local pawn shop charges $40 each so $120 for three with no discount. WTF?? Do these jokers really get this much for their services? I can drive 17 miles and get the same service for $15 per firearm.

Yeah, they can pretty much charge whatever they want. It's the same paperwork, even if you buy from them, which is what they want you to do. Mine charges $25 for one. I don't know about multiples. I would definitely drive the extra 17 miles to save $100.

Yeah small town's can get away with that. Here in Seguin the cheapest is $40 per transfer. The bigger the city the more competition. My buddy in New Braunfels charges $15 flat.

I suppose I should share this information with my brethren. I live just north of Floresville and do all my shopping there. I never drive to San Antonio anymore because it's too far away and I hate big cities. The FFL I found is below. I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I just want folks in Floresville to know they have a more affordable option than the couple we have in town.

No doubt some FFL's think their potential customers suck too. It's called free enterprise.

I came from Atlanta, GA and north of town about 30 mi was a fantastic gun store, always crowded. Free transfers. No kidding.

That's how return customers are made.
I'd spend money after the transfer and come back come back to spend more.

Some FFLs are flexible. One I use here I have bought several things from, and he'll "discount" transfers for me off the posted rate. He'll discount off his published or gun case price too, for certain people. He raised the posted transfer price to discourage people from using his shop only for transfers, which I can understand. Were I the business I'd rather get to know my clientele and have them buy vs. just transfer, and this particular FFL does a really good job of building the relationship (which is why I have bought more from him than anywhere else).

My LGS' transfer policy is kinda weird. $35 or 10% of the price of the gun, up to a max of $100, no word on how many guns per form or a discount on multiples.

Yeah, hence why I haven't used them. There's another place across town that charges 25 per form, max five guns per form.

The FFL I previously used charged $25 for the first transfer and nothing for others on the same form. If I did multiples I always gave him extra. He wasn't well and seems to have dropped off the map. I hope he's okay... nice guy. My new FFL is charging $15 each transfer... seems fair to me. But the other two in town charging $120-150 for three transfers on one form... NO THANKS!!

These guys are short sighted. I get they'd rather have someone shop there.

BUT it's basically free money, a few minutes of paperwork. And you have traffic in your store.

I've only NOT bought stuff once from someone doing a transfer for me. And that's because he lied to my face.

I've never had a gun store owner lie to me... not as far as I know. But I have always bought other things from the establishment and sent other customers their way if their FFL and/or merchandise prices were reasonable. There was a gun store near where I worked in San Antonio that raised their FFL fees from $25 each to $40 each overnight. Back then I would buy up to a dozen firearms at a time so they made at least $250 per form. I guess that wasn't enough for them... lost me as customer permanently and I never sent other paying customers to them ever again.

I might swing by there someday since I am just a hour away. Do they have a good selection of guns?

I believe when you say the gun store employee lied to you. The two FFLs I spoke to in Floresville didn't seem to be saying "get out" or "stay away" but apparently they make so much money in their gold and pawn businesses that they won't bother with anything unless they can make $150-200 per hour. All I can say about that is they won't be getting MY money.;)
